🚗 Vehicle & Importer Eligibility
Vehicle age: Must be ≤ 5 years from manufacture date
Steering: Must be converted to left-hand drive if originally right-hand
Emission compliance:
Must meet Chilean emission standards (currently Euro 5/6b for new vehicles)
Catalytic converter required
Importer status:
Must be a Chilean citizen who has lived abroad for at least 12–18 months
Limited to one vehicle per person

Pro forma or commercial invoice
Export certificate & registration/title from Japan
Notarized vehicle description (sworn declaration)
Proof of insurance
“Declaration of return” for expatriates
⚓ Shipping & Ports
Methods: Roll‑on/roll‑off (Ro‑Ro) or container shipping
Transit time: Ro‑Ro ~24–60 days; containers may take ~40–60 days depending on port .
Import ports: Arica, Iquique, Valparaíso (plus San Antonio, Lirquén); Iquique and Punta Arenas have free-zone benefits
💰 Customs, Duties & Taxes
Import duty: 6% of CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight)
VAT: 19% on (CIF + duty)
Engine-size tax: Applied for engines >1500 cc
Luxury tax: 85% on CIF exceeding ~US$16,818 (or ~US$19,318 under FTA adjustments)
Emission “green” tax: May also apply based on vehicle emissions and weight .
Chile’s customs valuation uses CIF; used cars get a depreciation discount up to 70%
📝 Customs & Registration Procedures
Submit all documents to Servicio Nacional de Aduanas.
Pay relevant customs duties, VAT, engine/luxury/emission taxes.
Passenger cars typically do not require pre-arrival inspection, though authorities may inspect at arrival
Following clearance, the vehicle undergoes:
Conversion to left-hand drive (if needed)
Verification of emission and safety compliance
Technical inspection
Registration at Registro Civil and obtaining Chilean license plates
Have Chilean auto insurance before road use
